Motherhood is HARD. Add a business into the mix and it's easy to find yourself stressed, overwhelmed, and feeling pulled in a million different directions. Here are a few tips to help you find more balance, and be more productive in your business - all while keeping family first.
Set Business Hours.
Decide on certain blocks of time that you are going to devote to getting work done, and do your best to keep your work within those hours. It might mean getting up a little early, staying up a little late, or utilizing nap times if your kids still nap. It's also a good idea to have a conversation with your family about when you plan to be "at work." That way they know not to interrupt during those times. Now that my kids are school age, I do the majority of my work while they are gone at school, and I do my best to put my phone down and be present when they get home.
2. Prioritize Self-Care.
If you don't take care of yourself, you won't be able to take care of anyone else. Think about the daily things you can do to keep yourself healthy and happy, and make it a priority to do those things. Whether it's exercise, prayer, journaling, eating healthy, or hobbies, make time for the things that refill your cup. You'll be a healthier mama for your kiddos and a more productive business owner in the long run.
3. Stay Organized. Lists, Calendars, Reminders, Planners. However you stay organized, just stay organized. Taking some time on Sunday nights to plan the menu for the week can save you from having to figure out what's for dinner every night once 5 o'clock rolls around. Setting business goals for the day, the week, and the month can help you stay on track too.
4. Be Flexible. Life doesn't always go according to the plan. If something needs to change one day, that's okay. Maybe you have a ton of work and your kid has to stay home sick from school. Remember, the work can wait. You can always reschedule meetings or make up your work some other time. Just don't let the stress of what you planned on doing get to you when there are last minute surprises in your day.
5. Ask For Help. Every mom needs help from time to time, whether you're running a business or not. Don't be afraid to ask for help. If your kids are old enough, involve them with house chores. Ask your husband if he can take over bedtime if you have a deadline approaching and work that needs to get done. You can also hire a sitter or pay someone to deep clean your house once a month! This is going to help you feel like a load has been lifted off your plate. It's totally worth the cost.
6. Celebrate Small Wins. If you get a new customer, celebrate. If you hit a new milestone or income goal, celebrate. Too often we forget to celebrate the wins, especially the small ones. But running a business is hard, and you need to find joy in it, especially when they days get hard. Let's face it - when you run a business, there are days you do a TON of work and make no money. It's not ideal, but that's the reality.
7. Maintaining Healthy Relationships.
I saved the best for last. This might be the most important thing that you can do as a busy mom and business owner. We are human and we need connection. Otherwise our soul, and our joy, begin to deteriorate. Make sure you are regularly connecting on a heart level with people who love and accept you for who you are. Share your joys, your struggles, your hopes and fears. I've found it's gotten much harder to find time to connect now that I'm 40, most of my friends are married with their own kids and their own jobs. But that doesn't mean it isn't important. We need people in our lives that we can laugh, cry, and do nothing with. So make time for people who matter.
